WESTPORT — A car was mangled and its driver hospitalized after a collision with a tractor-trailer truck Thursday afternoon on Interstate 95 in Westport.
The crash took place about 2:15 p.m. between the highway’s southbound Exits 18 and 17, according to Westport firefighters.
A Toyota suffered extensive damage in the collision with the truck, which had a fuel tank partially ripped off, firefighters said.
The car’s driver was evaluated at the scene by firefighters and transported to Norwalk Hospital by Westport EMS for treatment. The identity of the driver or the extent of injuries were not immediately released.
Firefighters had to cut the fuel tank supports to remove the dangling tank, but there was no fuel spill, according to the report. The tank was empty and posed no hazard.
Southbound traffic on I-95 was backed up several miles while emergency crews were at the accident scene.
State Police are investigating the incident.
