Newark-The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation into a crash involving a tractor trailer and a box truck that has left one dead on I95 early this morning.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the incident occurred at approximately 3:20 a.m. this morning as Abubaker Jamal-35 of Columbus, OH was operating a 2002 Freightliner Tractor Trailer that was traveling I95 northbound from the Maryland state line, and made an illegal U-turn at an emergency crossover to travel I95 southbound. The box truck swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid the tractor trailer, with the box truck’s left front striking the right rear of the tractor trailer. After the impact, the box truck continued south with its left side striking the roadway, causing the cargo box area of the truck to separate from the frame of the vehicle, and its cargo contents to empty onto the roadway. The tractor trailer came to a controlled stop on the right shoulder. The box truck came to an uncontrolled stop, upright, in the right lane and shoulder of I95 southbound.
Abodunrin Akinyanju the operator of the box truck was trapped in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
